Fat Like Me??? [Jul. 19th, 2008|08:23 pm]
I just stumbled upon this tv movie starring Caroline Rhea and a cute  blond named Kaylie Cuoco or something like that, about a teenager who dons a fat suit in the name of a documentary which seeks to discover how it feels to be fat. She has a fat mother and a fat brother and so she goes onto make this doc. Has anyone seen it? It was pretty wild. Some great moments actually for mainstream tv.

Help! [Mar. 3rd, 2008|08:53 pm]
I'm desperate to find an article that was published either in Fab or Xtra a few years back that interviewed a whole bunch of queer kids who talked about how no one identifies as lesbian anymore, everyone is queer, lesbianism is dead (i seem to recall this being the title) etc. I cant find it cause I dont remember where/when it was published and I've googled everything related and I still cant find it. Do you remember it? Maybe your friends were interviewed for it!
Help me out!
Thanks

(no subject) [Jul. 4th, 2007|09:13 pm]
From Joan Nestle's Blog-June 22nd:

Our friends in Haifa made us see with their eyes and so we saw through landscapes to deeper histories. When we first travelled the roads between Tel Aviv and Haifa, our eyes fell off the scrub hills, but Hannah asked us to look again. "See those prickly pear cactuses"--and she slowed the car down so we could focus our gaze--"every time you see a cluster of them, you are looking at the ruins of a Palestinian home." The farmers used the plant to form natural corrals for their grazing animals and also ate the fruit born at the tip of the rounded leaf. We started to look deeper, longer and soon we could see the tracings of another people, not a long gone people, but a displaced people. Stone foundations started to appear, buried in the uninteresting scrub. May you all have friends who make you look again. But when you see, there is no return to blankness, to cruel triumphalism.

Toronto's very own fat camp with an F [May. 3rd, 2007|10:00 pm]
my mother called me excitedly to tell me about this new summer camp opening for girls between the ages of 8-15 here in toronto called D-Phi Sorrority. She explained it was a summer camp with specific focus on health, body image, and fashion. So of course my guard goes up right away. So i went on the website and its sick and disgusting and the perfect formula for breeding self-hate and eating issues in young girls. Basically the girls exercise ALL DAY LONG and intermittently learn about body image and health and eat 'nutritious food' made and served by the camp. It's actually started by a woman who was involved in Green Acres Day Camp which is a day camp for rich toronto kids (a lot of Jews). So its almost $800 for ten days. I am going to call the director tomorrow to find out more about 'their slant.' This enrages me, or shall I say, has the potential to be enraging depending on what they have to say when I call tomorrow. Maybe the FFM can at least go in and do some workshops on our version of body image, at least to dispel the myth of the perfect body which I'm sure the campers will be encouraged to strive for.
Please check out the website. It looks totally fucked up the way they position it as a sorority for girls. I actually cant explain what it looks like, just look: www.dphi.ca

so so tired [Apr. 28th, 2007|09:01 pm]
from going through bags and bags and bags and bags of fat clothes. there is such amazing shit for sale at the gladstone tomorrow i cant even believe it. i think due to the great publicity we've gotten and the amazing response that has been generated, the event will be fabulous.
i hope.
i will be getting up at 7am cursing whatever it was that prompted me to organize this event but will be grateful once the people start arriving and buying.
so my video for the queer youth digital project didnt necessarily turn out the way i imagined and i was supposed to go and remake it but im not. ive just decided to put it out in the world as is and move onto my next project.

the next project friends might have something to do with The Tyra Banks Show. Thats all I'm dishing.

femme lightbulb moment [Apr. 11th, 2007|05:53 pm]
last night while getting ready for seder-(3rd, as part of the alterna-synagogue, always a week later), I realized because i refuse to wear pants to synagogue even though everyone wears jeans, that my femmeness is very much tied to watching my mother and grandmother (who's kind of butch in her own way) and other women march proudly into the sanctuary, a version of macho femininity.

I enter into a particular embodiment while getting ready for synagogue. I have to wear makeup, I have to wear a skirt, and boots. Even though I have moved away from the roots of my Jewish education into a considerably different jewish experience, the connection between my jewishness and femmeness remains ever present.

I think its tied to a fantasy of getting fucked at synagogue by another woman while im performing high femme.

The way i dress for synagogue now is totally a performance, a play on the fact that I used to wear the same type of clothes when I used to go before I had my Judaic click, but now my mindset is totally different. I'm saying a silent fuck you both to conservative judaism and conservative femininity.

or something along those lines.

holy mother of femme goddess, i get to go to synagogue again on friday night! im beginning to think i only go so that i can dress up.
